Lanarkshire karate club members dig deep for Christmas toy drive

Members of a Wishaw karate club have dug deep to help a number of local groups who support hard-up families.

Tokui Ryu Karate Club, based at Wishaw Sports Centre, together with the Saturday Circuit Class were delighted to participate and donate a wonderful collection of toys and gifts to MADE4U IN ML2 in conjunction with Pathway Church.

Sandy Kilgour has helped co-ordinate similar fundraising events by the club over the past few years.

He told Lanarkshire Live : “We have been blown away with the level of support and generosity from the Sat Circuit Class training people and the karate club.

“We have had friends and family donate at a time when we know that it’s difficult for everyone but people have given when they could and this will now make a huge difference to children this Christmas, we thank you all.

“We have worked as a team in the last four weeks to try and ensure that while we will not see the smile on these children’s face this Christmas morning, but we can all be proud that we helped some families when they need some support.

“It is a shame that we need to do this at all but it’s even more heartbreaking that there are families desperate for this help to keep the magic alive. Thank you for your support.”

In September, members of the club purchased food and personal hygiene products for several groups in Wishaw and Newmains.

The items were donated to community groups Made4UinML2, Dallies Community Larder at Newmains United and the Live Well foodbank based at Coltness Memorial Church.

Sandy added: “It was around £1500 of donations from cash and gifts.

“I have been all over North Lanarkshire buying bikes, scooters, nerf guns and prams to make this a strong donation collection.

“The company I work for, Scotmid, also gave me £130 in vouchers towards this cause.”
