Lanarkshire high school set to offer barista training at SQA level this year

Uddingston Grammar launched a new pupil-run school cafe last week - where kids can gain a qualification for their barista skills.

Café UG71 is a project designed to engage youngsters in practical courses which gain them adaptable, transferable skills and invaluable industry experience.

As part of this, the school plan on teaching a range of SQA units including barista skills, customer service and employability units, starting in August.

They invited a range of special guests to their official launch last week as the team tested new professional barista equipment provided by their business partner Matthew Algie, who have also trained Grammar staff and pupils as baristas.

And six pupils are now fully trained baristas and will be able to use their time in UG71 as work experience for the future.

Laura Jones, teacher of food technology, said: “We decided back in May that we wanted to do something a bit different to give our pupils practical work experience and that’s when we came up with the idea of UG71.

“Our pupils and staff are all huge coffee and hot drink fans, so we thought why not create something in the school for everyone to enjoy.”

She added: “Huge thanks to everyone for coming along to our launch, we had so many we had to split into two groups.

“We were delighted to welcome depute heads from other schools, the manager from our local Costa, staff from the SQA and also City of Glasgow College.

“Thanks for all the amazing positive feedback. Well done to our S3 baristas – over 100 hot drinks served.

“Absolute superstars!”
