Lanarkshire has the second highest coronavirus death rate in Scotland

Lanarkshire has the second-highest coronavirus death rate in Scotland.

Figures released by the National Records of Scotland today (Wednesday, April 22) revealed that 3.5 people in every 10,000 in Lanarkshire have died from coronavirus. Across Scotland, the rate is 2.9 per 10,000 people.

Another 90 people died as a result of the virus last week taking the total for the county to 228 as of Sunday, April 19.

For the second consecutive week, 90 people in Lanarkshire died as a result of the virus.

Last week saw Lanarkshire overtake Lothian as the second-worst affected part of Scotland from the virus.

By April 19, 1,616 deaths in Scotland were related to COVID-19 with a third of these occurring in care homes.

More than two thirds of COVID-19 related deaths were in people aged over 75.

Lanarkshire, along with Ayrshire and Arran (3.2), Borders (3.3) and Greater Glasgow and Clyde (4.4) are the only health boards to have seen a greater death rate than the national average.

Greater Glasgow and Clyde (513) along with Lothian (256), the only two health boards that cover a larger population than Lanarkshire, were the only two to record a higher number of deaths from coronavirus.

Last week, there were 844 more deaths in Scotland than usual for time of year, the majority (637) from COVID-19.
