Lanarkshire has its highest weekly Covid tally since first cases were confirmed in March

Another 47 positive coronavirus tests have been confirmed in Lanarkshire today.

More than 330 cases have been confirmed in the past week, the highest weekly tally since the first cases were confirmed in the region on March 7.

In the last week, 332 cases have been confirmed in Lanarkshire bringing the total number of positive Covid-19 tests in the area to 3699.

To put that into perspective, in the whole of August, just 176 cases were confirmed in the area.

The news comes as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced tighter restrictions were "almost certainly" going to be re-introduced across Scotland in a bid to slow the spread of the virus.

At her daily coronavirus briefing, Ms Sturgeon confirmed another 255 cases of the virus across Scotland.

No new deaths have been recorded in Lanarkshire since Thursday, September 17, after four deaths were announced within six days.

In total, 357 people have died from coronavirus in the area including 172 in North Lanarkshire and 185 in South Lanarkshire.

Most of the new positive tests (36) come from tests taken on Saturday, September 19, with the rest from Sunday, September 13 (2), Thursday, September 17 (3), Friday, September 18 (2) and Sunday, September 20 (4).

Only Greater Glasgow and Clyde (103) saw more new cases of coronavirus confirmed today than Lanarkshire.
