Lanarkshire Green MSP praises youth group for their COP26 efforts

Scottish Greens MSP Gillian Mackay has lodged a motion to parliament that commends a Wishaw youth group for organising a tournament that will see thousands of trees planted.

The Brave Jnr - a youth eSports group that uses gaming as a way to help young people feel empowered and build brighter futures - organised the #GetOnWithIt Cup in which 200 North Lanarkshire pupils competed in online video game Fortnite.

The group organised the event alongside Edinburgh Napier University and it was showcased at Strathclyde Student Union’s 'After The Pandemic' youth hub in Glasgow, as well as being broadcast live online.

During the tournament, players were asked to chop down as many trees as they could during their matches on the game with the promise that the university would plant the equivalent number of trees in real life with 8000 being the total number

Ms Mackay told Lanarkshire Live : “The tournament organised by The Brave Jnr was a huge success and I was delighted to learn of their innovative idea which will see 8000 trees planted by Edinburgh Napier University.

“This eSports group run courses and groups based on Gaming while teaching young people life lessons.

"I hope that they find a permanent base in Lanarkshire to bring more young people together in a positive manner.

“From this competition and from the protests during COP26, it’s clear to see the young people of Scotland are leading the way for climate action.

"Their lives will be defined by the climate crisis and we must listen to their demands.”
