Lanarkshire great-grandmother celebrates 100th birthday with family

It's not every day you can say you've turned 100-years old.

But last week Wishaw woman Sarah Hamilton could say just that as she celebrated with her family.

Sarah moved to Scotland from Country Antrim in Northern Ireland in 1951 with her late husband Matthew.

Since being in Scotland, she has given birth to a son, Derek, and a daughter, Agnes and has four grandchildren, as well as one great-grandchild.

Agnes told Lanarkshire Live: "When my mum and dad first came to Scotland, it was only meant to be for a few months while my dad was helping his friend with some work.

"When in Northern Ireland, my mum worked for Gallaghers in Ballymena, which was a cigarette manufacturer.

"In Scotland, she and my dad started a family and my mum was a housewife looking after me and my brother."

Agnes and Matthew, known mainly as Matt, were married for 66 years before Matt sadly passed away in January 2007.

Sarah celebrated her birthday last Saturday at her home in Cleland with her family.

"It was a really nice day celebrating such a milestone with my mum," Agnes added.

"We have been trying to keep my mum safe from the virus so to have her family in the house was a really nice moment.

"She really enjoyed the celebration and had a great 100th birthday."
