Lanarkshire golf clubs ready to swing into action again as lockdown eases

Private golf clubs in the area are preparing to swing back into action this week after the Scottish Government announced they will be easing lockdown restrictions from Friday.

Non-contact sports, also including tennis and angling, will be allowed to resume, which will see the likes of Cathkin Braes, Kirkhill, Hamilton, East Kilbride and Strathaven Golf Clubs welcome players back onto the course.

Among new rules introduced for player safety, flagsticks must remain in the hole and players must not touch the flagstick at any time.

All putts less than 12 inches must be conceded to reduce the risk to players and avoid as much contact with the hole as possible.

There will be no rakes in the bunkers and players must smooth the sand using their feet or clubs.

A Cathkin Braes statement read: “The return of golf is on the horizon and we look forward to welcoming you back to the club.”

Kirkhill Golf Club said: “The countdown to golf’s return is underway, let’s hope we can welcome back our members on Friday.”

Hamilton Golf Club vice-captain Iain Simmons said: “We are pleased about the prospect of being able to play golf again.

“The safety of the members and staff remains paramount and will continue to be foremost in our decision making.”

Since the lockdown, the club has even managed to boost their membership.

Iain added: “We’ve had a constant trickle of applications, which has been fantastic.”

Council courses in South Lanarkshire are still a couple of weeks away from welcoming players again, with course maintenance due to be carried out before they re-open.
