Lanarkshire Girls' Brigade captain receives Duke of Edinburgh gold award honour

A Lanarkshire volunteer is celebrating after receiving a Duke of Edinburgh gold award.

Jayne Copland is a Co-Captain at 1st Allanton Girls Brigade and was formerly at 1st Wishaw.

A delighted Jayne was invited to Holyrood to pick up her well-deserved award, which took months of hard work and dedication.

To achieve gold, Jayne had to complete a five-day expedition, a residential, a period of volunteering and develop physical and practical skills.

She travelled to the Trossachs for her expedition and spent time at Dumfries and Galloway youth leadership festival for her residential.

Jayne told Lanarkshire Live: "My gold DofE was supposed to take 18 months as that's all I had left before I was too old to do it, but due to issues with my expedition I got an extension of six months.

"I started to prepare the minute I decided to do it and started walking more to get ready for the challenge.

"My first expedition actually ended with me falling down a drop and ending up in hospital.

"I thought that my journey was over at that point but thanks to the amazing staff at Girls Brigade Scotland and DofE, I was able to complete my award.

"My second expedition was amazing as well as tough because I was already injured but my team was phenomenal and we all made it to the end.

"I acquired lots of outdoor skills that I didn't have before including map reading, pitching tents and cooking outside.

"I also learned First Aid and got the chance to enhance the BSL skills I already have."

Jayne added: "Overall, my experience of DofE was a tough one. It was physically and mentally challenging, but it helped me as a person and I couldn't be more proud that I completed it."
