Lanarkshire foodbank helps feed hundreds of struggling families this Christmas

A foodbank in East Kilbride has helped feed hundreds of needy families this Christmas, who would have otherwise gone without.

The town's Community Foodbank - which is a partnership of 10 local churches - provides emergency food parcels to those struggling to make ends meet as well as support and advice groups and signposting to other organisations.

And, sadly, once again there was no shortage of folk needing their help, with the charity's amazing efforts feeding 450 adults and 220 children with their Christmas hampers alone.

This saw them help nearly 300 households across the town.

On top of this they distributed more than 450 emergency food parcels this month alone.

The foodbank says it is seeing more clients register with them on a weekly basis due to a combination of job losses, the cut of the Universal Credit uplift and the current energy crisis.

Karen Dornan, from EK Community Foodbank, told Lanarkshire Live: "In what has been another challenging year we are overwhelmed and so grateful to the local community and our amazing volunteers for all their generosity, selflessness, commitment and tireless support.

"We honestly couldn't provide all we do without their help.

"It has been very difficult at points but we have always managed to provide for our clients and in many situations our supporters and volunteers go above and beyond to ensure no one is left without.

"We have seen more clients registering with us over the last month due job losses, the cut of the Universal Credit uplift and the current energy crisis, it is heart breaking, especially at this time of year, that so many are still struggling to provide for themselves and their families.

"It is our privilege to be able to serve the community in this way and draw alongside people in their time of need but could not do it without the amazing generosity of those who support us with donations and their time."

Meanwhile, East Kilbride's Loaves and Fishes, based in Kelvin Industrial Estate, once again ran a Christmas appeal which helped hundreds through food parcels and also gifts to those who would otherwise have been facing a very bleak festive period.
