Lanarkshire family raise £700 for Cancer Research with West Highland Way hike

A Lanarkshire family have teamed together to conquer part of the West Highland Way for charity.

Charlie Robertson and his nine-year-old grandson Charlie Smith accomplished the feat last weekend, raising nearly £700 for Cancer Research.

The avid walking duo were joined by young Charlie's mother Jacqueline Smith and family dog Ollie as they set off on the first leg of the popular route, hiking from Milngavie to Drymen.

The family from Hamilton have all lost relatives to cancer over the years and decided they wanted to raise as much money as possible for the cause as part of their venture.

They set up a Just Giving page where many people donated online, with others donating cash.

Janitor at St John Ogilvie Primary School, Charlie senior, has also thanked the many people who have donated in recent weeks, including his colleagues at the school who contributed over £200 collectively.

The 63-year-old said the walk was tough but they were all helped by great weather on the day as well as lots of support leading up to the challenge.

He told Lanarkshire Live : "It took us just under five hours with a couple of stops. It was rough terrain, it wasn't just like walking in the park.

"We started walking together during the lockdown because there wasn't much else to do. We walked places like Strathclyde Park and Chatelherault before but we knew this would be more difficult and longer.

"Our longest was probably six or seven miles before but the West Highland Way walk was roughly 12.5 miles."

The grandfather and grandson have enjoyed going on walks together in recent years, and hope to do more again in the future.

Their hike on part of the West Highland Way, albeit their toughest challenge yet, has given them the bug to do more, especially after their charitable efforts received great support.

Charlie added: "It was good to see everyone pull together to donate. Charlie and I have both lost family members to cancer so we wanted to try and help Cancer Research.

"We were very touched to see how much money was raised. Initially we were only looking for around £100, but it kept going up by the time we did the walk.

"It was great to see how many people were being so generous.

"I'd just like to thank everyone at St John Ogilvie High School who helped and everyone else who donated including all our family and friends."

The Just Giving page to raise money for Cancer Research is still active. And you can donate here.
