Lanarkshire drug dealer caught with heroin after cops stop car

An East Kilbride drug dealer was caught with heroin and cocaine when police officers stopped the car he was travelling in.

Jamie McCallum, 19, of Loch Meadie, admitted possession of the Class A drugs with intent to supply others.

He was a passenger in an Audi that came to the attention of police in James Murdie Gardens, Hamilton, around 3.30pm on January 18.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard McCallum was “extremely agitated” when officers spoke with him.

Alice Carey, prosecuting, said: “His hands were fidgeting in the waistband of his trousers and a small phone was vibrating constantly.

“He was detained and wraps of a white rock substance were recovered from the car footwell.

“The accused told officers he had heroin down his trousers and then handed over a bag containing eight wraps of brown powder.

“The heroin was worth £80 and the cocaine £180.”

McCallum has a previous conviction for serious assault for which he was placed under supervision and ordered to do 250 hours of unpaid community work.

In December last year he was given another community payback order and more unpaid work for possession of a baseball bat and threatening or abusive behaviour.

But defence agent James Rhodes pointed out there are no drug-related matters on his record and said he was “remorseful” for his involvement in the latest offences.

The solicitor produced a letter of support from a prospective employer.

After studying a criminal justice social work report, Sheriff Colin Dunipace agreed to have McCallum assessed for the court’s structured deferred sentence programme - an alternative to custody for young offenders.

The sheriff warned him: “You were involved in the supply of heroin and cocaine, and the court will always take a very serious view of that.

“It’s only because you are 19 that I will look at all options.”
