A Bothwell woman was over the moon to win first place at the World Irish Dancing Association competition in Holland.
Heather Keen made the journey to Eindhoven with her classmates (pictured above) from the Maureen Onesti Academy of Irish Dance, in the hopes of winning some trophies, and they did not disappoint.
The 20-year-old was absolutely thrilled to be named the ladies’ under-21 world champion.
Heather (pictured above right), a former Holy Cross pupil, said it was the happiest day of her life.
She said: “After dancing for 16 years, I never thought I would win a world title, I still can’t believe it at times. It was the best day of my life.”
Heather (pictured), is a social care assistant with South Lanarkshire Council in David Walker Gardens, Rutherglen, and only dances as a hobby.
And it was a very successful trip for the dance team as Ainslee McDade (19) placed second in the Under-20 Championship, Amy Morrison (16) placed eighth in the Under-17 Championship and Teri Gill (28)won sixth place in the Solo Dance Under-30 age category.
Maureen Onesti was so proud of all the girls. She said: “Everyone at the academy is so proud of Heather, especially all the little dancers who look up to her. Heather is an amazing role model for everyone at class as it proves that, if you work hard, a world title is achievable.
“Heather has worked so hard for this elite championship and her dedication has paid off. Heather is such a pleasure to teach and, to me, is the perfect pupil to have at classes.
“I’d like to congratulate Heather on becoming world champion from everyone at the academy – we are all so delighted for her.”
