Lanarkshire couples celebrate 50 years of marriage at glittering Motherwell Concert Hall bash

Dozens of couples gathered for a glittering celebration marking 50 years of marriage at Motherwell Concert Hall.

The couples who wed in 1969 celebrated their golden wedding anniversary year at the special event hosted jointly by North and South Lanarkshire councils.

Happy husbands and wives from across Lanarkshire enjoyed a dance to popular sounds of the sixties and reminisced about their big day half a century ago.

John Lennon tied the knot with Yoko Ono in 1969 and Linda Eastman changed her surname to McCartney when she married his fellow Beatle bandmate Paul. The QE2 made its maiden voyage to New York, and it was also the year that man first walked on the moon.

Pictures from each of the Lanarkshire couples’ wedding days were beamed onto a giant screen in the concert hall as they enjoyed afternoon tea.

North Lanarkshire’s Provost Jean Jones, said: “Golden weddings are very special occasions and bring back so many happy memories for people.

“Things have changed so much since 1969, when most couples might have met at the ‘dancing’, but the one thing which has endured is their lasting commitment to each other. To reach this milestone in married life is remarkable and I congratulate each and every couple.”

Each couple was presented with a commemorative gift and had their photographs taken to mark the occasion.
