Authorities across Lanarkshire are again urging people to take care with who they trust after an OAP was the victim of a high value fraud.
Police Scotland say the elderly victim was called by a number claiming to be from the TSB Fraud Department.
The caller alleged that the victim’s account had been used fraudulently by a third party with a transaction requested for a large value.
The caller then asked the victim to move money immediately for prevention purposes, which they did.
A spokeswoman for the police told Lanarkshire Live: “This is a scam.
“Do not transfer money to other accounts which do not belong to you. And don’t be afraid to hang up and call a trusted number to confirm such requests and approaches.”
Together with both North and South Lanarkshire councils, police have now issues advice on checking if calls are genuine or not.
That include:
• The fraudsters often use spoof numbers, making the call appear as though it is coming from a genuine bank number. It is for this reason police advise that if you call your bank back, you should use a different phone to the one the initial call was received on.
• Always double check numbers you’re given to call back on or call through an independently checked number, such as the main customer care number for the organisation and ask to be put through.
• If you are concerned, consider visiting your local branch instead of speaking to someone over the phone.
• Never give out a banking password or PIN number over the phone.
• If you have concerns or suspicions report them to police as soon as possible on 101.
