Lanarkshire college teams up with university to offer accounting degree qualification

An East Kilbride-based college is renewing a partnership with the University of the West of Scotland to offer a degree course.

Following a review of the collaborative franchise agreement, South Lanarkshire College has renewed its long standing link with UWS to deliver the BAcc (Bachelor of Accounting) degree to students at its campus.

This will allow the college to widen access to higher level education for the people of South Lanarkshire and beyond, particularly at undergraduate degree level.

College principal Aileen McKechnie said: “We are delighted to be renewing our partnership with UWS to deliver the BAcc accounting degree programme.

"This degree partnership programme, which has been running since 2011, is transformational for students here, as it provides direct articulation to year three of the BAcc accounting degree and the option for students to carry out their honours year at UWS.

"Our partnership with UWS ensures that degree level qualifications are more accessible to our students and provides alternative pathways to support student success.”

Aileen continued: “I am delighted that 301 students have gained their BAcc award via the partnership over the last 10 years.

"The BAcc pathway gives students the opportunity to start their study at NC level and progress all the way to year three undergraduate degree level, all while remaining on the campus."

Aileen added: “Our students have been stand out performers on the course, winning the UWS Court Medal for four out of the last five years, and one of our students, David Cowie, being awarded the Court Medal at Honours level.

"David’s now a lecturer at the college sharing his experience, delivering lectures on the programme and encouraging more of our students to progress to honours level at university.

“As a result of gaining this degree, the life chances and job opportunities for some of these students will be transformed.”

Link tutor, Dr David Leung, from UWS said: “Our mission is to make higher education accessible to everyone and a great way to achieve that is by supporting college students to progress onto degree programmes.

"We are delighted that this partnership will continue to enable the local community to have access to the high-quality degree provision that’s delivered via South Lanarkshire College, with a resulting significant positive impact on the local economy.”
