Lanarkshire college praised by HM Inspectors for its flexible approaches to learning

An East Kilbride-based college has been praised for its flexible approach to learning in the latest report by HM Inspectors.

South Lanarkshire College was also recognised for its digital upskilling of staff and students and adaptation of the curriculum post-pandemic.

The Education Scotland report highlights the positive progress being made by the college to support students and staff during the pandemic despite the challenges which it presented.

Paul Hutchinson, acting chair of the board, told Lanarkshire Live: “I am delighted that the college received such a positive Education Scotland review recently.

"The work undertaken by college staff during an extremely challenging time has been exemplary.

"The staff have gone above and beyond to support our students and to ensure a high-quality learning experience for learners.

"The Board has every confidence that the college will continue to grow over the next few years, as we explore innovative ways of supporting our students, community, local businesses and the economy.”

Among the highlights of the report are the clear and shared strategic vision of the college staff to ensure success, the change in curriculum to meet the needs of stakeholders and the economy and the flexibility of staff to adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The college was also praised for their collaboration and sharing of good practice, support of students and development of work placement opportunities.

And it was credited by inspectors for its work in safeguarding and student support.

The report highlighted that the college offers ‘comprehensive’ support to staff and students both on, and offline, which ensures that no learner is disadvantaged.

This included sector leading initiatives such as free health and wellbeing classes for students, being one of only two colleges taking part in the Emily Test Charter, aimed at tackling gender-based violence, and partnership working with organisations such as TogetherAll to ensure students can access support 24/7.

Stella McManus, depute principal, added: "There is no doubt that the past two academic years have been challenging for the college sector.

"Staff have risen to the challenge of adapting to new ways of learning and teaching, innovating to ensure that we continue to support our students, both academically and emotionally.

"The Education Scotland report highlights how outstanding our staff have been over the past two years to ensure the welfare of our students."
