Lanarkshire carers recognised by politicians at event held for Carers Week

Carers in Lanarkshire have been recognised for their continued efforts and contribution to the community.

Last week, Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley visited Lanarkshire Carers at Chatelherault Country Park in Hamilton for their Carers Week event.

She was joined by fellow MSPs Monica Lennon and Anas Sarwar of Scottish Labour, and Gillian Mackay of the Scottish Green Party.

Running from June 6 to June 12, Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring.

It highlights the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities.

For 2022, the theme for Carers Week is to make caring visible, valued and supported.

Carers throughout the week were recognised for their hard work. The MSPs learned about the challenges they have faced recently especially during the restrictions of lockdowns during the pandemic.

Local organisation Lanarkshire Carers ran a series of events including Tai Chi and wellbeing walks as well as providing tea and coffee for carers.

The event was the first in-person event held by Lanarkshire Carers since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Commenting, Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley told Lanarkshire Live : “I am grateful to every carer in my constituency and across the country for their hard work and dedication which can often go unrecognised.

“Carers contribute an incredible amount to our communities and I am committed to ensuring that they are valued and supported.

“I want to thank Lanarkshire Carers as well for everything they do to support carers in Lanarkshire and for putting on events like this to provide a bit of respite and wellbeing support for carers.”

Central Scotland MSP Ms Lennon added: "It's lovely to be at Chatelherault Country Park with Lanarkshire Carers to celebrate Carers Week.

"It's been a chance for me to come along and say thank you to carers across Lanarkshire for the amazing work they do.

"It's really important that we make carers visible, that we value care and that we get support to people when they need it.

"Lanarkshire Carers are so welcoming, if you don't know about them get in touch and be part of it."

Lanarkshire Carers thanked the politicians for coming along to show their support.

The organisation posted: "Thank you to Gillian, Angela, Monica and Anas for taking the time out of their busy schedules to drop into our Carers Week event at Chatelherault Country Park."

They added: "Thank you to everyone who has helped to celebrate this Carers Week with us to make it so successful and we hope that you have had as much fun as us."
