Lanarkshire care home's trishaw project is officially launched as locals go for a spin

A Lanarkshire care home have kick-started their plans to provide outdoor trips for their residents.

Rutherglen Care Home are looking to have a trishaw on their premises, with which elderly members of the home can be taken out to visit local areas such as Overtoun Park.

To officially launch their campaign to buy a trishaw, the group held an open morning where they demonstrated the vehicles.

They also heard from Christine at Cycling Without Age Scotland and Eugenie Aroutcheff from the gardening charity Grow 73, who are working on a nearby project with the care home.

Residents Margaret, Agnes and George all had a ride on the trishaw and Agnes told organisers: "It's brilliant, I could stay on here all day"

Also on hand were Activity Coordinators Rachel and Ryan and a representative from the families, Charlie, all of them have volunteered to become 'pilots' and will be ambassadors for the project.

The care home's Paul Lawson told Lanarkshire Live : "The aim is to fund raise in the care home and also get some support and sponsorship from local businesses to allow us to purchase our own trishaw.

"We will be able to be use the new link with Overtoun Park and the community gardens to take the residents out and let them enjoy the surroundings and fresh air.

"For volunteer pilots it offers a way to stay active and have social interaction and it also gives them a great sense of achievement and satisfaction knowing that they are enhancing the lives and wellbeing of the residents.

"We will be making links with the local schools and nurseries so that this project will be intergenerational and the trishaw can be an asset to the community."
