Lanarkshire business rep celebrated at Scotland Loves Local Awards

The work of one of Lanarkshire 's leaders in the community was celebrated at the Scotland Loves Local Awards.

Hamilton Business Improvement District (BID) manager Malcolm Thomas-Harley was recognised for his efforts to boost trade and bring more people into the town through various activities.

The business rep was celebrated as a runner-up in the Place Leader category at the awards.

The achievements of all of the awards’ finalists were highlighted and celebrated during an online celebration broadcast yesterday (Thursday November 25), presented by STV’s Sean Batty.

Viewers heard how Malcolm has spearheaded a new market which has brought in more than 5000 extra people into Hamilton.

Working with businesses and performers, it has been estimated that the work has generated £100,000 for the local economy, with great feedback from residents and visitors.

Recently, Malcolm has led community initiatives such as five Christmas market events running in Hamilton town centre through the festive season, as well as a unique Christmas lights switch on event which was held last weekend.

Organised by Scotland's Towns Partnership (STP), the Scotland Loves Local Awards recognised and rewarded remarkable work taking place to transform communities and make them better places to live.

They also highlight the vital need for people to think, choose and spend local to help businesses in their community survive the impact of Covid-19.

Professor Leigh Sparks, Chair of STP, said: “You cannot fail but to be both humbled and energised by the fantastic work that all of our nominees are doing to create a fairer, stronger, more sustainable future where local life is the heartbeat of Scotland.

“They go above and beyond, day in, day out to help create communities which we will all be the better for and deserve this rich recognition. My congratulations go to all of our finalists.”
