Lanarkshire Beat the Street competition enters its final week in East Kilbride

Every Beat Box will be giving out double points during the final week of Beat the Street.

More than 11,750 people have signed up for the interactive East Kilbride game and have together walked, cycled, wheeled, run and scooted an incredible 134,500 miles so far in the competition.

And the community’s efforts this week in exceeding 125,000 miles have meant that organisers have donated an additional £100 to Kilbryde Hospice.

The game will come to an end at 7pm on October 26 when the leaderboard will then be taken down and the winners announced shortly after the competition.

Currently, Crosshouse Primary School leads the total points leaderboard, with St Kenneth’s Primary School in second place and Long Calderwood in third position.

Mark McGinley, principal teacher at St Kenneth's Primary said: "St Kenneth's Primary is really enjoying Beat the Street, the enthusiastic response from our children, staff and parents has ensured it has been great fun.

"It has been brilliant to see so many children and parents at the Beat Box first thing in the morning and when leaving school, you can see them all keen to get started again earning points.

"It has been great to see everyone work together, a real team effort. It has even got a little competitive amongst some of the staff.

"The children have been able to get out in their classes on a few occasions thanks to support from Active Schools and High School helpers.

"Beat the Street is a fantastic initiative that has really encouraged healthy exercise and at the same time a real sense of community."

Chairman of South Lanarkshire Council’s community and enterprise resources committee, Councillor Robert Brown, added: “The game has flown by once again and we’re about to enter the final week.

"The community has racked up an impressive active travel mileage and we’d love to see how far you can go in the last few days.

“The Go Celebrate week is designed to celebrate your participants and to give an opportunity to earn even more points this week. Could you make a surprise leap up the leaderboards or perhaps cement your place at the top?

"Are there any Beat Boxes you could visit before the end of the game?”

Beat the Street East Kilbride is being delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of the local authority, with support from South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, Smarter Choices, Smarter Places and the Scottish Government.
