Lanark United reach Sectional League Cup semi-final

Lanark United have a semi-final to look forward to at the end of August, after reaching the penultimate stage of the Sectional League Cup.

The Yowes will travel to Pollok on Wednesday, August 28, after beating Rutherglen Glencairn 4-3 on penalties on Wednesday night, following a 2-2 draw.

Lanark had two early chances through Hugh Kerr and Sean Lindsay, but took the lead in 23 minutes when a driving run from Josh Gracie saw him feed in Lindsay, he picked out Declan Lafferty and his low cross was knocked in by Kerr.

The hosts had a strong penalty claim denied early in the second half when Kerr appeared to be bundled to the ground.

Shortly after that Lafferty and Jordan Fraser combined to set Kerr up again, but his shot was blocked.

Glencairn came back into the game and drew level in 55 minutes through Jay McKay.

The game had opened up by this point, and United passed up another good chance when Cammy Lawson crossed for Kerr, but his header was well saved, and in their next attack, a PJ O'Donnell free kick was scrambled away by the Glens defence.

Lawson then cleared a McKay shot off the line as the visitors threatened.

Gracie fired over and Kerr shot wide as United tried to regain their lead.

Glencairn punished them for those misses in 86 minutes when Callum McRobbie finished well from a Gary Smith cross.

Lanark fought back and levelled three minutes later when Gracie cut inside before playing a good ball out to Lindsay who, after steadying himself, hit a superb shot that curled past the defence and keeper into the net.

United had a chance to win the game in normal time when O'Donnell's free kick picked out Lawson, but his thundering shot crashed off the bar.

That took Lanark into their second penalty shoot-out of the week and they again came out on top when Lindsay, Lafferty, Kerr and James Martin all scored, with Scott Johnson saving one from Glencairn.
