Lanark ASC trio make GB open water debut

Three Lanark Amateur Swimming Club swimmers did well at the National Open Water Championships in Rotherham.

In what was described as “a learning curve” at the event, held by Swim England at Thrybergh Country Park, the trio made their debut at GB level and also competed for the first time without wet suits, the temperature being 21 degrees.

Justin Bone, 12, competed in the 2km event, finishing 23rd in a time of 34 minutes 01 seconds.

Thirteen-year-old Millie McArthur found the water cold, but swam a best ever time of 30 minutes 02 seconds to finish 30th in her group.

Abbigail McArthur also swam a personal best in the 5km event, taking 11th place in a time of 1 hour 12 minutes.

Coach Karen Kelly said: “It was a big step up for the three swimmers, a massive learning curve, but they gave it their all and finished top Scot in their respective age groups.

“They have been training hard and with coach Stephen Pratt, and can be proud of qualifying and competing at GB level.”
