Lana Del Rey wears 'ineffective' crystal mesh face mask to meet and greet

Singer Lana Del Rey has stirred controversy with her new choice of mask: a mesh crystal design she wore to a meet and greet over the weekend.

In pictures and videos she shared from a recent book signing, the see through mask appeared to offer little protection leading fans to criticise the star.

Del Rey made an appearance at a Los Angeles Barnes & Noble bookshop to promote her new poetry collection Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass.

Coronavirus guidelines in Los Angeles ask people to wear a face mask when out in public.

While Del Rey was technically wearing a face mask, many took issue with the open mesh she had chosen.

She wore a similar style for a photoshoot with Interview Magazine and appears to also have a black version, which is described as 'Lana’s Own' in the photo credits.

Some compared the mask to mesh on supermarket fruit and others said she “[makes] it so hard to stan” her in the comments.

Others pleaded with her to wear an appropriate mask.

One fan in attendance at the signing claimed the event was “shut down shortly after it started” by the health department. When asked by other fans if her mask was “fully mesh” they said it was “ineffective but cute.”

Evening Standard Insider has reached out for comment.

Her mask is similar to a rhinestone one worn by Paris Hilton to dinner in Los Angeles this July. Her mask was met with a similar response.

Following the backlash, Del Rey’s sister said via The Independent that the singer had “tested negative” and was “more than six feet away” from fans at her signing.

Other pictures show Del Rey taking pictures with fans, while she also shared a video of fans following her as she left the venue in a car, many of them side by side as they attempted to take pictures of the departing star.

Del Rey has not responded to the backlash, though yesterday she posted a video of herself wearing a different mask - this time a full coverage leopard-print design. In the video, she read one of her poems for her followers.

Many of her fans piled into her comments to discuss her new mask, which she took off at the end of the video before turning off her camera. One of most liked comments on the video read: “Finally a better mask.”
