Lamppost knocked down in Old Market Square during Christmas market set-up

A traditional-style lamppost has been damaged in Nottingham's Old Market Square during the set-up of the Christmas market.

Pictures show the pole of the lamppost being held by a JCB vehicle on the walkway outside Five Guys in the Old Market Square.

One of the lamps can also be seen lying broken behind a Christmas market stall.

To allow for removal of the street lamp, fencing was placed around the area blocking most of the walkway on Sunday, November 3.

One man, who did not wish to give his full name, from Beeston, said: "It does seem as though the square is getting damaged through overuse.

"I like to see it open with nothing on it, and a lot of the events are quite large."

Another couple who also did not wish to be named, said the event was good to bring people to the city for Christmas, but did not feel it should not be at the cost of architecture.

The Nottingham Winter Wonderland and Christmas market is organised by the Mellors Group and is set to open on November 15.

Mellors Group have been approached for comment, but had not responded by the time of publication.
