FANS of bands Auxfire and The Treehouse Children will remember Joey Geyer as one of the more inventive guitarists in the Newcastle indie scene.
However, Geyer has re-emerged as a stand alone vocalist with new math-rock band Lamphead. The foursome, which also features Damian Moore (drums), Darcy Long (guitar) and Liam Hewitt (bass), released their debut single Peace Circle earlier this month.
On Friday they'll release their second single Restart My Heart and its music video, which will feature on their self-titled debut EP, out on April 2.
Lamphead will debut as a live band at the Cambridge Hotel on April 4 alongside Sleepeaser and Sonder.
VACATIONS BOOKED
LIVE-STREAMING show Music People have delivered a coup for the final episode of their first season by securing Newcastle indie heavyweights Vacations.
Boasting a monthly Spotify audience of 1.7 million listeners, Vacations are easily Newcastle's most globally-popular act and present Music People with a prime opportunity to attract its biggest audience.
Episode 13 of Music People next Tuesday will also feature Newcastle punk queens Bitchcraft, Mid North Coast indie band Vanilla Gorilla and a fourth act yet to be confirmed.
You can watch Music People via the Newcastle Herald Facebook page from 8pm or live at Newcastle's Civic Theatre.
MARVELLOUS PLUG
WHEN it comes to music journalists in Australia they don't come much more respected than Stuart Coupe, who by the way, also helped steer the careers of The Hoodoo Gurus and Paul Kelly.
So when Coupe recommends a band, it means something. One of the latest bands to receive the Coupe seal of approval is Sydney folk-rockers The Marvellous Hearts who play at Mayfield's Stag and Hunter Hotel on Friday.
"There's snippets of every record they've ever heard swirling around in their sound," Coupe wrote. "One minute you hear The Beatles, then it's Bob Dylan on rotation.
"Hell, then I hear a fragment that reminds me of one particular Paul Kelly song, and another faint echo that had me thinking Goanna. And yet out of this melting pot comes something distinct and un-pigeonholeable."
ROYAL STARFISH
ONE could argue Chocolate Starfish have always been a glorified covers band. Carly Simon's You're So Vain was their biggest hit in 1994 and in recent years the band have paid homage to Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell and INXS's Kick albums.
Chocolate Starfish frontman Adam Thompson is preparing to step into Freddie Mercury's gigantic shoes to take his Bohemian Rhapsody show on the road.
Newcastle's Civic Theatre will host Thompson on November 5 where he'll perform a 26-song set of Queen classics.
