'Lampard's revolution continues' - National media react to Chelsea's win over Crystal Palace

Mirror

"We spoke during the West Ham defeat about just how lockdown may have helped Pulisic ease into the demands both of English football and of playing for Chelsea, and there was another example here," writes Mark Jones for the Mirror.

"The Eden Hazard comparisons may be easy and a little far-fetched for now as the American is his own man, but he is undoubtedly beginning to have a Hazard-like impact on certain games.

"At Chelsea the Belgian was a master at picking his moments, and Pulisic shares that quality as he can suddenly burst into life to make telling contributions, such as his brilliantly struck goal."

Crystal Palace 2-3 Chelsea: Frank Lampard press conference

Mail

"It really didn't need to be this excruciating for Chelsea. They won in the end, Tammy Abraham plundering the decisive goal as the Blues strengthened their grip on Champions League qualification," writes Sami Mokbel for the Daily Mail.

"But gosh they made life extremely hard for themselves. Crystal Palace deserve credit for making a fist of a game that at times looked certain to see Chelsea canter home.

"Equally, Chelsea deserve their fair share of blame for turning what should have been a cruise into a heart-stopping crisis.

"At this stage of the season, however, victories are all that matter. That would have been Lampard's exact sentiments when Kepa Arrizabalaga brilliantly tipped Scott Dann's header on to the post deep into stoppage time.

"This was an uncomfortable night for Lampard and Chelsea when it really didn't have to be.

"Indeed, there was a certain unease about Chelsea's opener when it arrived in the sixth minute."

Independent

"Chelsea hung onto a lead, the post, and their foothold on the top-four with desperation and more than a little luck as they clawed to a chaotic victory at Selhurst Park," writes Tom Kerhsaw for Independent.

"Twice Frank Lampard’s side saw their two-goal advantage halved, once by a blur of magnificence from Wilfried Zaha and the other self-inflicted by absent defending.

"Twice they should have been punished in a frantic period of stoppage-time, where Scott Dann’s header was denied by the woodwork and Christian Benteke cut through on goal only to be stopped in his tracks by a brilliant tackle from Kurt Zouma.

"Ultimately, though, as Lampard’s revolution continues to sputter, it is another vital three points, a gasp of air between themselves and the shadow of Manchester United that looms heavily on their coattails, and another panic-stricken but, crucially, successful step towards the finish line.

"For all their success this season, there’s no avoiding that this is a Chelsea side with weaknesses and naiveties, at times clumsily riding towards the Champions League."

Telegraph

"Whatever the future holds for Willian, his Chelsea legacy is looking pretty safe thanks to his decision to stay at the club for the rest of the season," writes Matt Law for the Telegraph.

"Despite winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Europa League during his seven seasons at Chelsea, Willian has been a player who has divided opinion among fans.

"But nobody will be arguing that the 31-year-old has been anything but brilliant ever since Chelsea restarted their season.

"His two assists at Selhurst Park, for Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic, plus a goal from substitute Tammy Abraham, helped to keep Chelsea on course for Champions League qualification.

"Chelsea almost shot themselves in the foot by twice letting Crystal Palace back in and then surviving two huge let-offs in stoppage time, but this felt like a big win."
