Lampard's Pulisic problem, Havertz's latest position - 5 things spotted in Everton vs Chelsea

Lampard's Pulisic problem

The main talking point once the Chelsea team news was confirmed at 7pm was Christian Pulisic's absence through injury once again.

Sustaining a hamstring issue in the FA Cup final against Arsenal at the start of August, the United States international has endured such a stop-start campaign.

Having played 60 minutes against Leeds United last weekend and then watching on from the bench as an unused substitute against Krasnodar in the Champions League on Tuesday, many believed that ex-Borussia Dortmund man would be in the XI despite Frank Lampard stating at his press conference that his player had a "tiny bit of awareness" on one of his hamstrings after the Leeds match.

Pulisic in the end missed out and it means that he has only played in five league games for the team so far this season.

While Chelsea are doing just fine towards the top of the league without him, it is becoming a bit of a problem and Lampard and the Blues certainly could do with him as he makes the team even stronger.

Hopefully he won't be absent for too long as some big games are coming up over the festive period and Chelsea are going to need him.

Havertz's position

The absence of Pulisic for the match meant that Chelsea had limited numbers on the right with Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi also missing.

In the end Lampard plumped for Kai Havertz on the right of Olivier Giroud with Timo Werner on the opposite flank.

Having played in that role countless times in the past, the 21-year-old was involved right away as he played in Reece James, who saw his shot deflected wide for a corner.

Not getting a lot of joy down the right initially with makeshift left-back Ben Godfrey making life difficult for him, Havertz soon found himself on the left as he traded positions with Werner but it didn't get much better for him there.

He really did struggle at Goodison Park and he was subsequently hooked with 20 minutes remaining on a night to forget for both the player and club.

Havertz's pre-match conversation

Ahead of the game a couple of Chelsea players pulled Havertz to the side to have a quick word with the youngster.

Lining up on the right side, James, playing behind him, offered some words of advice as the duo would need to link up well to get the better of Everton.

Giroud was the next to do likewise as had a minute with his teammate prior to the referee blowing his whistle.

Given the Frenchman's brilliant form of late, he was no doubt telling Havertz to get the ball into him so that his fellow attackers could work off him.

Things just didn't click for the summer signing and he needs to try and recapture his form rather quickly.

A rare Mendy blip

Chelsea's struggles in the goalkeeping department have been well documented over the past couple of seasons.

With Kepa Arrizabalaga making some high-profile errors and subsequently finding himself in and out of the team, Lampard made a move this summer to bring Edouard Mendy to the club.

Making a huge impression since his switch from Rennes with nine clean sheets from 14 games, the 28-year-old will want to forget his trip to Goodison Park right away.

The Senegal international was guilty of giving away a first-half penalty as he charged out of his goal and brought down Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box after the in-form striker got the better of Thiago Silva.

So consistent in between the sticks following his move to the club, it was a rare blip in such a positive start to his Blues career.

Goodison Park struggles

Chelsea really don't like playing at Goodison Park.

A notoriously difficult ground to visit and get the three points, the Blues have really struggled in L4 over the past ten years.

Playing a total of 14 games at Goodison in all competitions last decade, Chelsea only won four of them with Everton victorious on eight occasions.

The Toffees can now add another win to their impressive record courtesy of Gylfi Sigurdsson's first-half penalty.

It really isn't a happy hunting ground for Chelsea and Lampard will be hoping that's the last time they have to visit the stadium this season.
