Bangkok Airways will cease all of its Bangkok-Lampang flights from Suvarnabhumi as of Oct 1, says Department of Airports (DOA) director-general Darun Sangchai.
Mr Darun said the DOA will meet the airline company on Sept 4 to discuss details regarding the flight cancellations.
He added the meeting will also discuss how the government could step in to subsidise the airline to allow it to continue flying the route.
At present, only two airlines operate at Lampang airport: Bangkok Airways with three flights per week, and Nok Air with two flights per week. According to the DOA, the airlines served a total of 292,905 passengers on that route in 2016.
Mr Darun added the route cancellation by Bangkok Airways would cause major inconvenience for passengers looking to travel to Lampang.
He said passengers may have to land in Chiang Mai instead, and take buses or other vehicles to their destinations.
Lampang airport has been included in the DOA's plans to renovate airports across Thailand, Mr Darun said.
As of yesterday, Bangkok Airways' online flight-booking service did not display any available flights from Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) to Lampang from Oct 1 onward.
A spokeswoman for Bangkok Airways said the airline will make an official announcement on the issue shortly.
