Lameroo's water play plan to make a splash after years of drought

The Southern Mallee town of Lameroo is spending drought funding to revamp its town centre around the theme of water, showcasing centre pivot irrigation in a design that features a playground and splash zone.

Stage one of the Lameroo Town Centre plan will begin in the next three months and will include a BMX bike track, dog park and playground.

Unique play equipment inspired by the district's centre pivot irrigation systems will feature as part of the design.

Circular zones will also be incorporated, characteristic of the circular green fields seen in aerial images where the irrigation method is used.

The design has been created by a Adelaide landscape architecture firm.

Southern Mallee Council Mayor Andrew Grieger said it was an exciting idea.

"They've taken that concept in the design, all the designated areas are in circles," he said.

"It's good to be different, just to get people to be interested, asking questions."

Neighbouring towns get $4m boost

The plan aims to bring together the community by creating new public spaces that encourage connection and improve health and wellbeing after years of drought.

It will also be an incentive for people to visit the towns and provide a financial boost to the community.

It's a twin project to an upgrade planned for the neighbouring town of Pinnaroo, which will include the installation of a 'big thing' attraction.

Combined they are worth $4 million, consisting of $1 million in Federal Government drought funding, $2.25 million from Building Better Regions grant and a $75,000 council contribution.

Councillor Grieger said he hoped the redevelopments would also foster town pride and bring the community together.

"It's been a long time since there's been any work done on the main street, I think people will feel proud of their town again and people passing through will want to stop," he said.
