Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball had one of the most unique roads to the NBA. He went from a viral high school star to dropping out of school for Lithuanian pro ball to playing in the now-defunct JBA, prep school and the Australian league. It was quite the ride that still led to Rookie of the Year honors.
But for LaMelo, school was not a priority. That much was obvious for a player who basically knew he was going to be in the NBA his entire life. And he wasn’t shy about admitting that.
In a recent feature story with GQ, LaMelo ripped the notion of needing to go to school in a now-viral quote. He said:
“We not trippin’ off school. We not dumb. We know how to learn. We don’t need school. And school not even teachin’ you (expletive) — what the (expletive) is school?”
That’s some serious Cardale Jones energy right there.
Despite the hilariousness of that quote, LaMelo likely heard about it from the Hornets and people around him. Because on Tuesday, he took to Instagram to clarify what he meant in classic LaMelo fashion.
He wanted to make it clear that his comments really pertained to him and not the average person. He also didn’t want his comments being used as an excuse for young fans to skip school.
Stay in school, kids. Especially if you want to be a doctor!
