Lamborghini worth '£300k' wrecked after driver smashes into motorway barrier

A Lamborghini driver smashed into a motorway barrier then fled the scene after aquaplaning, police have said.

The white luxury supercar, thought to be worth around £300,000, was left decimated this morning - abandoned on the side of the M66 near Ramsbottom, north of Manchester.

Its bonnet was submerged in thick shrubbery when it was found by traffic officers, who described it as a "very expensive mistake" .

The entire front section of the Lamborghini sustained extensive damage, and the windshield had cracked and caved in.

The boot, where the engine is stored, had also popped open.

Greater Manchester Police posted images of the smash, warning the public of the dangers of aquaplaning, the Manchester Evening News reports.

In the post, officers said that cars "don't make very good boats".

They tweeted: "Road traffic collision on the M66 near to junction 1.

"The driver of this Lamborghini lost control on standing water and took out a section of barrier before making off on foot prior to police arrival.

"A very expensive mistake.... They don't make very good boats! Vehicle recovered and [enquiries] ongoing."

Heavy rainfall overnight across the North West of England saw flooding on a number of roads.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather alert this weekend, meaning that "severely bad weather is possible over the coming days".

During a yellow alert, members of the public should "plan ahead thinking about possible travel delays, or the disruption of your day-to-day activities".
