Lamborghini seized after driver 'used Stevenson Square as a racetrack' in front of armed cops

A supercar spotted speeding around Manchester city centre has been seized after it emerged the driver was merely a named driver on his parents' mid-range motor.

Greater Manchester Police say an armed unit on patrol in the Northern Quarter spotted a distinctive yellow Lamborghini using Stevenson Square 'as a race track.'

It was pulled over on Thursday afternoon and the driver spoken to.

However checks revealed the man was in fact merely a named driver on his parents' Volkswagen Golf, and was therefore not insured to drive it.

And the 4x4 vehicle, believed to be worth around £160,000, has now been seized as is customary for uninsured vehicles.

GMP's traffic unit posted on Twitter earlier saying: "The driver of this Lamborghini felt the need to use Stevenson Square @GMPCityCentre as a racetrack, in full view of a liveried firearms patrol. Turns out him being a named driver on his parents' Golf didn't cover him to drive the vehicle so it has been seized for no insurance."

They later added that he had "borrowed it from a family member, apparently."

The vehicle's owners will now have to attend the police pound with proof of ownership and insurance in order to have it released.

There was very little sympathy for the driver in response to the tweet.

One commenter said: "What a numpty."

Another said: "I imagine everybody offered to drive it back to the pound."
