Atletico Madrid are celebrating their 11th LaLiga title after beating Real Madrid to glory on the final day of an eventful 2020/21 season.
Second-half goals from Angel Correa and Luis Suarez sealed a 2-1 win for Diego Simeone’s men against Real Valladolid, who took a surprise early lead through Oscar Plano but ended the afternoon with relegation to the Segunda Division confirmed.
With a two-point title advantage at the start of the day, Atletico just needed to match Real Madrid’s result to clinch their first championship triumph since 2014.
Los Blancos trailed for most of their game against Villarreal courtesy of Yeremy’s early effort, with late strikes from Karim Benzema and Luka Modric enough to win the game... but not to overhaul their cross-city rivals.
Elsewhere, Elche secured their LaLiga survival as Huesca joined Valladolid and Eibar in being relegated.
Meanwhile, a Lionel Messi-less Barcelona overcame Eibar to secure third place, Real Sociedad clinched fifth spot as Real Betis took sixth and Europa League finalists Villarreal finished seventh.
