In the wake of parting ways with Ty Lue after failing to reach an agreement on the head coaching vacancy, the Lakers will restart their search for a head coach with a host of new names included. Most notable of the new candidates, as reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic, are Jason Kidd and Frank Vogel, both former coaches with varying levels of success.
The Lakers are adding former NBA coaches Lionel Hollins, Frank Vogel and Mike Woodson to their coaching search, according to league sources.
Kidd is the more popular name despite being the vastly inferior option. In five years as head coach, one with Brooklyn and four with Milwaukee, Kidd earned a 183-190 (.491) record. In 24 playoff games, Kidd went 9-15 with one playoff series win. Kidd won three Coach of the Month awards but is more known for his exit from Milwaukee and the largely positive effect it had on the team.
Vogel has a more decorated career, racking up a 250-181 record in six years with the Pacers from 2010 until 2016. His most recent stint in Orlando was far less successful as he went 54-110 for a .329 win percentage.
Lionel Hollins is most known for his time in Memphis and the Grit and Grind era. Hollins, though, has not coached since the 2015-16 season after spending two unsuccessful years in Brooklyn.
Similarly, Mike Woodson has spent even longer out of the league as a head coach. last coaching in the Knicks in 2013-14. Unlike Hollins, Woodson has spent the last four years on the bench as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Clippers under Doc Rivers.
That quartet, along with Juwan Howard, will be the focus of the Lakers search moving forward, but given how the negotiations played out with Ty Lue, it likely won’t be the end of the circus for Los Angeles.
