Lakers starting lineup: JaVale McGee says he and Dwight Howard are good ‘1-2 punch’

Outside of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the big-money shooting guard acquisition Danny Green, the other two spots in the starting lineup for the Los Angeles Lakers seems up for grabs. But no matter what happens, particularly in the middle, both of the team’s centers expect to perform well.

JaVale McGee, who is coming off a career season last year with the Lakers as their starting center for 62 of 82 games, expects to start again this season. But he told Spectrum SportsNet that no matter who starts, the combination of he and Dwight Howard would be a strong “one-two punch” at center.

I feel like he’s going to fit great. I feel like we have similar games, and the fact that we can have a one-two punch right after each other, coming in right after each other, I don’t think that’s going to be good for other teams at all… Two bigs that can defend the rim, run the floor and dunk it, so I’m excited.

McGee, who was signed to a two-year deal this summer to stay with the Lakers, would appear to have the inside track at starting. But should Dwight Howard rediscover his form from even a few years ago as a strong finisher, capable rim defender and elite rebounder, that would certainly push him into the starting lineup discussion.

But McGee does have the advantage that he played last year, whereas Howard played only five games in 2018-19.
