Lakers granted disabled player exception for DeMarcus Cousins injury

Although they may not eventually have the opportunity to use it, the Los Angeles Lakers got an additional tool on Wednesday that they can use to build their roster in the coming NBA season.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that the Lakers application for a Disabled Player Exception has been accepted by the NBA, giving them a $1.75 million exception to sign an additional player after the DeMarcus Cousins injury. The Lakers would still need to have an open roster spot, which they currently do not have with 20 players on their training camp roster.

The exception gives the Lakers an additional tool to add another player, most likely someone who gets waived by another team during the season. Many have seen Andre Iguodala as a potential candidate to join the Lakers, given his playoff experience and the fact that he’s a former client of Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka. The DPE gives them more chances to sign him later on in the season, but it as it stands now Iguodala remains a member of the Memphis Grizzlies.
