Lakers G-League team signs NBA vet Spencer Hawes

There are less than 12 hours to go for players currently on teams to get released in order to be playoff eligible and the Los Angeles Lakers still have an open roster spot to fill.

But as the clock winds down on any potentially new free agents to hit the market, the Lakers G-League squad made an interesting move for a veteran big man on Friday morning.

According to Adam Johnson of 2 Ways & 10 Days, the South Bay Lakers have acquired NBA veteran center Spencer Hawes. Hawes last played in the NBA in 2017 for the Milwaukee Bucks.

The G-League assignment could be a way for the Lakers to get a look at a player who hasn’t been in the league for a little while, but still has a lot of NBA pedigree. Hawes also curiously fits a new trend in the Lakers recent additions as a center with 3-point range.

Hawes is a career 35 percent 3-point shooter in his 10 year NBA career.  Other potential free agents on the market for the Lakers are Carmelo Anthony, Zach Randolph and Marcin Gortat.
