Lakers expected to have Dion Waiters in for workout on Monday

The Los Angeles Lakers won’t just meet with Dion Waiters on Monday, as previously reported, but they will also judge his physical readiness to contribute to the team. After the Lakers made a roster move on Sunday to clear a spot on their team, the Lakers will have Waiters in for a workout to show that he’s ready to go for a team with designs on winning an NBA championship, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

Waiters, formerly a client of Lakers president Rob Pelinka, is currently represented by Rich Paul and Klutch Sports, who of course represent LeBron James, Anthony Davis and a host of other NBA stars. Waiters is coming off of a rough 2019-20 season with the Miami Heat, where he played in only three games and was suspended various times for a violation of team rules.

Waiters averaged a career-low 9.3 points per game this season and only played in a total of 42 minutes so far this season. Over the last few seasons, Waiters has been derailed by ankle injuries after a career season with the Miami Heat in 2016-17. However, if the Lakers can strike gold with another big-name free agent that has fallen out of favor, as they did with Dwight Howard back in August, then waiving Daniels to add Waiters may prove worth it.

Other veteran players such as Tyler Johnson, Allen Crabbe, and Jamal Crawford could also be potential targets for the Lakers.
