Lakers bring in David Stockton, waive Jordan Caroline

Over the last 24 hours, with head coach Frank Vogel taking an extended look at LeBron James as the team’s starting point guard, the guards on the Los Angeles have received even more scrutiny than they did in the preseason when many saw it as a weakness. And while this move isn’t likely to affect the big club, the Lakers are evaluating their options by bringing another point guard into camp.

The Lakers announced on Friday morning that they’d signed David Stockton, son of NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton, and were waiving rookie Jordan Caroline.

Stockton most recently played in the NBA in 2018 for the Utah Jazz and played professionally last season in Germany for Medi Bayreuth. He shot 42 percent from 3 in Germany last season, averaging 8.7 points and 3.5 assists per game. He was also a part of the USA Basketball team that qualified for the World Cup at the 2018 FIBA Americas qualifying tournament in Cuba. Stockton played in two games, averaging 19.0 minutes, 8.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest. He shot 33.3 percent from the field and 66.7 percent (2-3) from 3-point.

According to The Athletic’s Lakers beat writer Bill Oram, the South Bay Lakers have had their eye on Stockton for quite some time.
