A north suburban man was killed Monday morning when he drove through an intersection in McHenry County and crashed into multiple vehicles.
The 42-year-old Villa Park man was driving a Nissan cargo van northbound on Keystone Road at 7:50 a.m. when he drove through a stop sign into Route 173 in unincorporated Richmond Township, the McHenry County sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The van was struck by an eastbound Terex mobile crane, which sent both vehicles into the westbound lanes of Route 173, the sheriff’s office said. Both vehicles then struck a Jeep Wrangler attempting to turn southbound.
The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. The McHenry County coroner’s office has not released details about his death.
His 28-year-old male passenger was extricated and flown by helicopter to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in serious condition, the sheriff’s office said. The drivers and sole occupants of the crane and Jeep refused medical transport.
Authorities closed down Route 173 and Keystone for about seven hours as crews cleaned up and investigated the scene.
