Lake to remain closed due to dangerous algae which 'turned swimmers' costumes green'

A Wirral lake which swimmers said had been turning their costumes green will shut for at least a week after tests confirmed the presence of algae.

People took to social media at the weekend to complain that swimming in Marine Lake in New Brighton, which is run by Wild Shore, was causing a range of unusual effects, with some people saying they had felt ill after swimming in the water.

Earlier this week, Wild Shore confirmed they would be temporarily halting activities at the lake while they investigated suspected blue green algal blooms, with swimmers advised to stay clear.

Today the company posted an update stating that tests had confirmed the presence of the algae, meaning the lake would remain closed for at least the next seven days.

The spokesperson for Wild Shore, posting on the company's Facebook page, said: "The initial tests we sent away have confirmed that there is a level of algae in the marine lake.

"We have made the decision to close our business for ONE week.

"We will only re-open when it is safe to do so. We will continue to test the water over these 7 days.

"The samples for these algae tests are taken from various points of the lake to get a good reading of the overall water quality and ensure we are completely safe to operate.

"We are recommending no one swims in the water, including dogs."

The spokesperson added: "Our priority will remain the safety of our customers and other lake users, please be assured we will update you of our test results and plans moving forward as we continuously monitor the situation.

"We have attempted to contact all weekend bookings so please check your emails and do not hesitate to get in touch on 0151 660 6000 if you have any concerns surrounding a booking this week."
