Overnight Navy Pier Flyover work postponed by ‘mechanical problems’: CDOT

People walk and ride bicycles on the Lakefront Trail near the Navy Pier Flyover Project construction zone on Saturday morning, May 27, 2017.

Planned overnight work on the Navy Pier Flyover project in Streeterville has been rescheduled because of mechanical issues.

The ramp from northbound Lake Shore to Illinois Street was initially set to be closed from 12:01 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday to install new steel beams for the flyover, according to a statement from the Chicago Department of Transportation.

“Due to mechanical problems, this work cannot be completed tonight,” CDOT officials wrote in a statement Monday afternoon. The closure will be rescheduled.

Construction on the flyover, which will carry pedestrian and bike traffic on the Lakefront Trail over Illinois Street and Grand Avenue, started in 2014 after years of planning. The project has been criticized for taking longer to complete than the Golden Gate Bridge.

A section of the flyover opened in December 2018.
