Lake Macquarie City Council will write to the NSW government opposing the potential early release of convicted pedophile and former councillor Milton Orkopoulos from prison.
The council passed a notice of motion at this week's ordinary meeting to pen letters to NSW Minister for Corrections Anthony Roberts, Minister for Justice Troy Grant and the Corrective Services commissioner formally expressing its opposition to his speculated release.
Orkopoulos, the state Member for Swansea at the time of his arrest in November 2006, was convicted of dozens of offences including rape, seven counts of sex with a child and possessing child pornography.
The crimes were committed between 1995 and 2006 and involved the grooming of three young boys with drugs and alcohol in exchange for sex.
Earlier this month, it was reported the former Labor party member was a step closer to walking free, with the parole authority signalling its intent to grant his conditional release.
Liberal Lake Macquarie councillor Kevin Baker, who moved the motion at Monday night's meeting, said it was important for council to "recognise and condemn" Orkopoulos' "horrific crimes".
"I think everybody in the community finds these crimes absolutely abhorrent," he said.
"I think it's fairly safe to say that people do not support this man being released earlier than his sentence has expired."
Orkopoulos sentence formally expires on October 18, 2021. He was first eligible for parole on February 18, 2017.
Last November, Orkopolous had an application for day release refused.
Commissioner Peter Severin cited "community concerns" in refusing the application.
The council passed the motion with a 10-1 vote.
Independent councillor Wendy Harrison voted against the motion.
