A $15 million seniors housing development will proceed at West Wallsend after winning approval from Lake Macquarie City Council.
The council approved AEH Group's plans to add 60 independent-living units to Sugar Valley Lifestyle Estate at a meeting of the development and planning standing committee on Monday night.
The estate already houses 145 seniors living units based around a nine-hole golf course.
The existing golf course clubhouse will be demolished and the course reconfigured to allow for the new units, part of five interconnected multi-storey buildings.
The development required a 48 per cent variation to the area's standard building height limit, but it was deemed acceptable.
The maximum height of the buildings will be 12.59 metres.
The development includes 20 one-bedroom units and 40 two-bedroom units.
Associated community facilities will also be constructed, including a hydrotherapy area, café, meeting rooms, and off-street parking for 74 vehicles.
Cr Brian Adamthwaite commended AEH Group on its approach.
"This is a developer that had engaged with its community years before it began [an application]," he said.
"This particular development has enlightened the community."
The development received unanimous approval.
