Lake councillor rules out run for second term in next election

Lake Macquarie Liberal councillor Kevin Baker will not contest the local government election in September, announcing he won't seek a second term on council.

The north ward councillor said in a statement he would step away from local government to focus on his family and other interests.

"It is with sadness that I announce that I will not be nominating to contest the upcoming local government election," he said.

"This decision has been reached after significant deliberation and reflection, and particularly takes into account my already high workload and charity work, and my family situation in living and caring for my son with a significant disability and medical conditions.

"I would like to take the opportunity to thank the people of Lake Macquarie for putting their trust in me, and for their support over the last three and a half years. It has been, and continues to be, an honour to serve you."

Cr Baker, who has been vocal on a range of issues in the council chamber over the past few years, said he was most proud of his advocacy for those within the community who are disadvantaged and standing up for the rights of residents.

His decision to step away is a surprise given he had been mooted as the Liberals' potential mayoral candidate for the September election.

He will continue to serve on council until the end of this term.
