After half a century, Lake Burley Griffin's stone walls are getting a facelift.
Penetrating radar and resin injection will be used to improve the stability of the 56-year-old lake walls, which have been weakened over time by wind and waves.
ACT senator Zed Seselja said the $3 million works were a "much needed injection" for the local economy as Canberra looks toward recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
"Works were recently under way at Acton Peninsula, are currently here at Lennox Gardens today, and will be seen across other sites on the Lake over the next 18 months," Senator Seselja said.
"Lake Burley Griffin is a central part of Canberra life. People of all walks of life are drawn to the lake - whether for some exercise, as part of a visit to our great national institutions, or for a family picnic."

The walls are believed to have been built two years before the lake was filled in 1963. Over time, wind and waves have weakened joints, stones have dislodged and paving has come loose on top of the walls.
Throughout the pandemic the lake has seen a lot of pedestrian activity. with Canberrans getting exercise while shutdown measures were in place.
The ACT government will announce on Tuesday a plan to open businesses in the territory to stage two easing of restrictions.
