Laidler's grocers goes into liquidation after 107 years 'due to coronavirus'

A grocers which has served the North East for more than a century says it has gone into liquidation due to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Fruit and vegetable distributors Laidler's was founded in 1913 and was based out of its headquarters in Double Row, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland.

Laidler's had a retail shop but also delivered fresh produce across the North East as far as Berwick, Durham and Hexham.

The company's website says it employed around 28 people.

The business was run by Harry Laidler and wife Dawn who say they have been forced to close down as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

A statement on the firm's Twitter page reads: "Unfortunately we have become another victim of this current pandemic. We are now in liquidation after 107 years of trading.

"Any web order that has been paid for will be refunded today - I thank everybody for their support and wish you all the best."

Druridge Bay ward councillor Scott Dickinson said the loss of Laidler's was 'such a shame'.

He added: "What a shame after they tried so hard to adapt and serve the public as well as business.

"They've delivered to us at Hadston House for a long time and my parents pub for years and years before that. Such a shame."
