It seems not everyone likes the sound of Lady Gaga’s music. Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim has branded her recent Oscars medley a “travesty”.
Gaga had performed a series of songs from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music, including My Favourite Things, Edelweiss and Climb Every Mountain. But it didn’t impress Sondheim, whose credits include West Side Story and Sweeney Todd. He told the Times that Gaga’s performance was “ridiculous, as it would be from any singer who treats that music in semi-operatic style. She had no relationship to what she was singing.”
Gaga’s performance did, however, receive praise from some famous fans at the time. Julie Andrews, who played Maria in the 1965 movie, told ABC news: “The minute I got home from the Oscars I called her. I confirmed that I thought she was fantastic and had done a wonderful job, and I couldn’t thank her enough. She really did a wonderful thing with the medley. She sang superbly.”
Lady Gaga described sharing a stage with Andrews, who appeared at the end of her medley, as a “magical” surprise.
