
Women walk among a sea of Shirley poppies at Showa Kinen Park, which straddles Tachikawa and Akishima, Tokyo, on Friday. About 1.8 million Shirley poppies are in bloom in the park. The flowers are almost at their peak -- about one week earlier than usual, thanks to the high temperatures of March and April, according to the park. An annual Shirley poppy-picking event was initially planned for May 27, but will now be held on Sunday and May 20.
