Ladies Day prizes at Newcastle Racecourse and how the Best Dressed Lady competition works

If there's something ladies in Newcastle know how to do, it's step out in style.

Just as the recent Plate Day at Gosforth Park showed, Geordies are a trend-setting lot and spectators' eyes were as much on each other's outfits as on the racing action.

While it was the men who had their turn in the spotlight on that big day, as a prize was awarded to the Best Dressed Man, Ladies Day at the  Newcastle Racecourse on July 27 will be a whole new story.

Its annual Best Dressed Lady contest has, over the years, become the centre of eye-catching action over the summer racing season and Geordie women will be once again in competition at what is a highlight social events of the year.

Ladies Day one of the biggest events in the North East's racing calendar and not just because of the horses.

It will see race-goers dressed to the nines and there's every reason to put in that extra effort thanks to the added incentive of the popular Best Dressed Lady contest.

Previous occasions have seen a cracking prize list, topped by the likes of return flights to Dubai or Istanbul,  and this year’s competition boasts another fabulous prize pot.

Thousands of pounds worth of goodies will go to the winner, runner-up and 10 finalists.

The best-dressed competition marks the culmination of the hugely popular summer race-day which has built up a reputation for world-class racing and top entertainment.

Here's an idea of what's up for grabs for the winner:

Judges will select a the top 10 finalists who will be in the spotlight in the parade ring between races.

Next a selection of semi-finalists will be made and around 4.05pm the winner will be announced, again the parade ring, where the prizes will be given out.

For those hoping to attend the event but have not yet made plans, there are tickets, starting at £35, still available.

The event starts at 11am, when gates open, and the first of seven flat races - which includes a Silk Series Lady Riders Handicap: part of a £150,000 race series specifically for female jockeys - begins at 1.40pm and ends at 5.05pm.
